Types of Releases

Mass Release

This is a release of multiple butterflies at once from one large container, usually a decorative box or cage, by one or two designated persons.

Individual Release

This type involves the release of individual, separately packaged butterflies by many participants simultaneously. Everyone especially enjoys this type of release as they can each be involved.

Please browse to our video page to view an individual release demonstration and an actual live butterfly release at an event.

How Does a Release Work?

Your butterflies are carefully shipped via overnight delivery. They will arrive the day before your event with full instructions. The butterflies are kept in their package until shortly before the release. At that time, the butterflies are distributed to the guests and at that special moment, released. As the butterflies emerge, they will be ready to spring into action for everyone to enjoy! Your imagination is the limit when it comes to planning your release. We would be happy to offer suggestions.

The Native American Legend is popular to read at weddings.

How Are They Shipped?

Your young butterflies are hand fed, exercised and carefully packaged with plenty of cushion, each in their own envelope for safety and shipped in an insulated box with a cold pack. This keeps their body temperatures cool and allows them to remain in a dormant, sleep-like state during shipment via overnight delivery. They have plenty of oxygen and are capable of living for up to 4 days on their own body stores.
In keeping with USDA regulations, we are not permitted to ship Monarchs west of the 100th meridian (Rocky Mountains).

What Are The Best Conditions for a Release?

Butterflies can only be released in temperatures 65° F or above. They must also be released no later than one hour before sunset to allow them time to find food and shelter before nightfall. Releases are not safe during rain or heavy wind and definitely not indoors.

How Many Should I Order?

A good rule of thumb is approximately 2 dozen per 50 guests for a mass release. Of course the more butterflies, the more dramatic the effect. For an individual release, it is completely up to you to determine how many of the guests are to be involved in the release. For example, all of the guests vs. only members of the bridal party.

When Do I Order?

It is suggested orders be placed at least 45 days in advance to insure the butterflies will be ready in time for your event. We know that in some cases such notice cannot be given and those orders will be gladly filled whenever possible. Funerals are the exception.
